In a must win game against the Waitaki 1st XI, Duncan Drew and Thomas Shields combined for a massive 275 run third wicket partnership to help their side to a record crushing 211 run victory.

After winning the toss and electing to field the school side was rewarded with two quick wickets to leave Union 2-8 early in the second over, enter Thomas Shields and Duncan Drew. Early on both batsmen benefited from loose bowling, moving the total to 100 of only ten over's, and after 20 over's the score was 175-2, with over 50 extras. As the innings went on the bowling improved and some good field placements led to the skyrocketing run rate decreasing as both batsmen looked to rotate the strike and keep the score ticking along. Just before the drinks break at 25 over's, the pair broke the Senior third wicket partnership, held by Drew and Mark Wilson since 1999. In the next few over's Drew brought up his second century of the season, and the two moving past Jason Little and Fred Fenton's 227 partnership to become the highest partnership in club history. When Drew was finally caught with his score on 120 in the 40th over, the two had put on 275 runs for the third wicket in 39 over's to leave their side 283-3. Thomas Shields soon had reason to celebrate, bringing up his debut senior century with a single, making it only the second time that two players have scored a century in the same innings for a Union senior side. It wasn't long before Shields to was out, stumped bringing to an end a fine innings of 104, Union 301-4 in the 45th over. Some attacking batting at the end of the innings from Glynn Cameron (25), Jeremiah Shields (18), Todd Sidon (12) and Paul Johnston moved the total to 359-6 at the completion of the 50 over's, the highest Union senior total in one day match.

Chasing 360 for victory Waitaki Boys got of to a steady start but was struggling to score the required seven runs an over. Paul Johnston was economical bowling 7 over's for only 18 runs as Union looked to pile on the pressure. After 20 over's with Waitaki on 68, the message was sent out to attack the bowling, Waitaki doubling their score in the next ten over's. After scoring 120 with the bat, Duncan Drew was bought to the bowling crease. In a display of fine left arm spin he ripped through the middle order taking 6 wickets in only 19 balls. Fittingly he took the last wicket, McGimpsey caught out for a duck. Waitaki all out for 148, a record win to Union by 211 runs the largest winning margin by a Union Senior side in a 1 innings match.

A day to remember for two Union players, Thomas Shields bringing up his maiden Senior century and 275 run partnership with Drew, and Drew scoring 120, taking 6-7 and three catches.
