The Union Senior team had a loss and a tie in the opening weekend of club cricket at Waitaki Boys High School yesterday.

In the 12pm game new captain Brad Fleming lost the toss and Union were put into bat. A good contributions from Stephan Grobler (41), Paul Johnston (19) and Dan Conlan (31*) saw their team through to 156 in their allocated 20 overs. Andrew Fisher was the best of the Valley bowlers taking 2-33 in four overs.

Union looked to be on top with Valley 62-5 in the 9th over however a whirlwind innings from Llew Johnston saw his team through to the required total in the 19th over. Johnston's 78 not out included 5 sixes and 8 fours. For Union Brad Fleming took 3-23 of 4.4 overs, Valley reaching the required total 7 wickets down.

In the second game Union had Albion under massive pressure at 37-5 but a 66 run 6th wicket partnership between veterans Peter Cartwright (50) and Dylan Winter (28) saw their team reach 120-7 in their 20 overs. For Union Matt Lilley (3-21) and Dan Conlan (3-29) took three wickets each.

Union started its run chase badly being 6-2 in its first two overs. This brought to the crease a name familiar to cricket followers a decade ago - Neil Rushton. Rushton playing his first game for the club in nine seasons, formed a 104 run partnership with veteran Paul Johnston, before the loss of Johnston for 41 in the 18th over. With 7 runs required in the last over, 5 runs were scored in the first 5 balls. With one ball left and two runs required a quick single was run to leave the match a tie.
