Despite only being in North Otago for about one and half seasons, Englishman James Cutt had a huge influence on cricket in North Otago and Union in particular. His best performance for the club came in the Dick Hunt Holiday Competition final during the 2007-08 season when Union played a heavily favoured Valley side at King George Park. Valley had qualified for the final being undefeated in the round-robin phase while Union qualified by having a better run/wicket ratio than Albion and Oamaru. Union won the toss and elected to bat and after the completion of 20 overs they had recorded a score of 175-3 with James carrying his bat through the innings with a well hit 102 including 4 sixes and 9 fours. He also combined with older brother Matt to put on 63 for the third wicket. Valley struggled to put up a challenge, and ended all out for 123. James returned to the club for the 2008-09 season during which he regularly opened the innings with ex-Otago representative Duncan Drew in both Hawke Cup and club cricket where at club level they averaged 73 together including two partnerships over 130. It wasn't just on the field where his influence was felt it was also of the park as well, providing hours of coaching throughout the region as a coach employed by North Otago. Union benefited from his coaching offering tips to players during practice and running drills and warm-ups before games. (Apr 2009) |
