In a rematch of the previous weeks fixture Union beat Oamaru in the first round of Dick Hunt 50 over matches by 6 wickets at Excelsior.
Ben Cant celebrated his return to Union colours and his debut at Senior level for the club with a fine all round performance that saw him take 3-11 in his bowling and get his name up on the honours board at KGP for the second time in the hundreds category with 102.
Oamaru batted first and struggled to the tight bowling of Cant and Phil Crossan being 4-13 of eight over's before the Paterson brothers where brought together at the crease. The two combined for a 81 run partnership before Glen Paterson was caught of the bowling of Stu Dickinson for 17. Kieran Paterson then in a typically aggressive innings looked to attack before he was caught 5 short of a century. Oamaru making 196 with Cant (3-11) and Paul Johnston (3-41) being the main wick takers.
Union got of to a great start thanks to the North Otago openers Chris Smith and Ben Cant. The two combined for the highest partnership in the match moving the score to 116 before Smith was caught of the bowling Jordan Horrell for 34. Cant, who at one stage looked like he might bat out the entire innings for a not out, brought up his century with less than 30 runs to go before he to was caught this time to the bowling Antony Sewell for 102. The Union batsmen then slowly moved to the required total, winning by 6 wickets in the 45th over.Player Pages:
