The Union Senior team remain on top of the Borton Cup standings after a dominant 182 run victory over Waitaki Boys.
After Waitaki Boys, the only team to defeat Union in Borton Cup competition this season, lost the toss and was asked to bowl looked to be right on top dismissing the Shields twins in the first three overs to leave the home side in trouble at 2-9. Veteran Duncan Drew and t20 captain Blake James then bought their team back into the game putting on 73 for the third wicket before the loss of Drew for 41. James then continued to anchor the innings, putting on 54 with Gary Singh (19) for the 4th wicket and then 30 with Brad Fleming before he was dismissed, caught behind by Alex Wilson of the bowling of Quinn Wardle. James making 74, his first half century this season. Fleming (42*) and Happy Singh (30) then pushed their side beyond 250, putting on an unbroken 52 for the eight wicket to leave Union 256/7 a very competitive total on a very quick King George Park outfield. For Waitaki Quinn Wardle took 3-33 of 10 overs, while Liam Mavor took 2-67 of his 10 bowling the last few overs of the innings.
Previously this season the school side had put on some good batting efforts making 200+ totals on more than one occasion. However they quickly showed that this wasn't going to be the case this day losing wickets constantly and at one point looked liked they might not even make 50, let alone the 257 required for victory. Player coach Ben Donkers coming in at 7 top scored with 21, while opener Quinn Wardle made 19. Lochie Mavor was the last batsmen to fall run out by Scott Kitto after Thomas Anderson hit the ball back to the bowler. With the fall of his wicket the total read 74, well short of the target set by Union. Blake James backed his batting effort taking 3-23, while Jordy Whyte was also superb with the new ball taking 3-18. Brad Fleming took 2-7 of 5 overs including 3 maidens and Happy Singh took 1-22 including the wicket of Donkers of his 6 overs.
