The Union Senior team had a record victory over Glenavy in exceptional batting conditions at King George Park in the weekend.

Batting first Glenvay recorded 285/6 in its 50 overs, easily the highest score against Union this season. It was dominated early by player coach Ethan Booth (89) and then by Rodney van Leeuween who was 101 not out at the completion of the innings. For Union only Gary Singh took two wickets or more (2-37).

Chasing the imposing total Union got of to a fast start with the Shields twins reaching 33 before the first wicket was lost (Jeremiah Shields 18). Duncan Drew then joined Thomas Shields at the crease as the pair combined for 144 runs that put their side on top. The score was 177 before Thomas was out for 56, his 6th half century in Union colors. Still needing 119 runs for victory, Glenavy was still in the game but a 72 run partnership between Drew and James took them effectively out of the game. Drew bringing up his 10th century for the club and surpassing Ronald McDonalds record of 9 set 86 years ago. Drew was the last wicket to fall with the score at 249, but James and Gary Singh then took their side home with 3 overs to spare and 7 wickets in hand.

A fantastic record breaking performance from the team, being the highest second innings total in a one innings match for our Seniors and also the highest successful runs chase.

Our Seniors are now confirmed minor premiers for the second season in a row, and for the forth time winners of the David Sewell Shield since it was first introduced 9 seasons ago. They will play Oamaru this coming weekend in the semis.
