Jeremiah Shields

The Union Senior team continue to set the pace in Borton Cup cricket remaining unbeaten after a 6 wicket win against Oamaru thanks to a debut century from Jeremiah Shields.

Chasing 221 for victory, Shields combining with Glynn Cameron (29) got their team off to a great start putting on 87 for the first wicket before Cameron as adjudged lbw. With the loss of Drew (1) to a brilliant diving catch by Regan George, Jeremiah then combined with his twin and captain Thomas Shields to move the total to 142 before the loss of Thomas for 18. This bought Sean Conlan to the crease and they brought the total to 179 before Conlan was caught for 13. Paul Johnston then joined Jeremiah and had to face a fiery spell from South African Francis Mostert before Shields bought up his century in the 41st over of the innings with a nice straight drive. It was Shields first century in Union colours. He then finished the game in style hitting the next ball for a massive six then the one after that for a four finishing with 112 not out and a six wicket win. Johnston was left on 13 not out, while for Oamaru Mark Julius took 2-30 in his ten overs.

Earlier Oamaru was bowled all out for 220 in the 48th over in an innings dominated by Mostert. Top scoring for the innings, his notched up his second century in as many weeks as he added 114 to the Oamaru total. He was helped along by James Mallinson who in a cameo innings scored 36 in only 19 balls, while Mostert had some good partnerships with Mallinson (64) and also put on 69 with Witham. For Union, the Oamaru top order was knocked off by Matt Lilley who had the opposition in trouble early on and finished with 3-28 of 10 overs while Mike Ormandy (2-24) and Duncan Drew (2-35) took two wickets each.

With one game left in round robin play seniors will look to remain undefeated in the Borton Cup as they play Eastern away from home and start to prepare for the semi-final the following week.
