A cricket match between teams representing Waitaki High School and the Union Club was played yesterday on the School ground.
The Union team was captained by J. Robertson, and won the toss from Deans, the school skipper, and decided to bat on a good wicket. J. and H. Robertson were the opening batsmen for Union. Both batsmen commenced scoring immediately, till 12 was on the board, when the latter hit across a full toss from Donaldson and retired. Turner filled the breach, and the over out. A succession of singles was broken by a good hit for three by Robertson. From a stroke to mid-on, Turner was run out, his partner refusing to leave the crease. With the advent of Haig, play brightened up, both batsmen going for the bowling in good style, till Haig hit all over a short ball from McGregor. Cardlick did not stay long, being bowled by a good leg-break by Ronaldson. G. Brooker filled the breech but was then immediately run out. J. Geddes, the erstwhile Otago rep, came to the crease, and hit up a merry 20, when he was caught and bowled by McGruer. G Sparks was the newcomer and arrived only to see H. Robertson clean bowled. Uttley rattled on 21 before Ronaldson found his weak spot. Sparks, followed immediately, being badly beaten by Donaldson. Tait was the last man in, and after making four, saw the innings close for 122.
School started off well, Deans and Douglas, by good cricket, making 60 and 27 respectively, although both were missed in the field several times. These were the only batsmen to make double figures, Dean carrying his bat right through. The fielding of the School team was much better than that of Union, and this superiority won them the game by the narrow margin of one run.
