The first cricket match of the season was played on King George's Park yesterday. The outfield, though good, considering the age of the ground is still rough, and matting was laid on the wicket, which played fast and true. The Union Club batted first and the Oamaru fielding consisted at the outset mostly of substitutes. Sutton was the only one of the bowlers that caused the batsmen trouble, and as the fielding was very poor, though Mowbray did a lot of useful work and Borton and Brooker can be credited with good catches, the Union side had a good time. Ongley played useful if not very bright innings, and was fortunate to last so long in view of the chances given. Turner was the most attractive batsman on the side, and his driving was hard and clean, though he offered one or two opportunities of dismissal before playing across a slow full-toss. Haigh the most of the close boundary and sored his runs wholly by using a good eye and long handle. Sutton with 5 for 83 and Brooker 3 for 27, shared the wickets between them. The Oamaru side, which had shown poor form in the field, was not better at the wicket, and though it may have been said to have bad luck in losing Arnold by a bad l.b.w. decision that did not justify the poor general showing. Ongley and Turner went through the side with ease, Borton and Arnold along making any defence.
