School batted first and opened with Craig and Smyth, who gave them a good start, Craig being out l.b.w. Smyth batted very solidly for his 33. Hunter was bowled with a full toss, Parkes was run out, unluckily when he was promising well, and Sumpter and Scrimshaw were both got rid of early, but Allan played one of the best innings played by a Waitaki boy on that ground for many seasons. He played sound, bright cricket ; took no risks in hitting across the ball, but made his strokes crisply, and he got his runs when they were wanted. His greatest weakness was his indecision in running, Torlesses had got 14 and looked like making more when he was foolishly run out. Inglis got 13, mainly on the leg side before he was out but Howells and Allan stuck up the bowling, and the last wicket partnership added about 70 runs, Howells shaping very well. Union made a bad start, Gale cocking one up to mid-on without scoring and Ewing and J. Robertson succumbing to catches off the same bowler, but J. and W. Stott started to bang the bowling about, and when W. Stott disappeared Ongley came in to play the best innings he has played for many years. It was not without blemish, but it was free, and as Stott hitting hard and offered at the other end runs came very fast until Ongley made a miss-hit off Howells. J. Stott went on with his powerful hitting until he had made 128, which included eight sixes and 16 fours. Chances came to hand from him, but were not accepted, and he gave a good exhibition of hard hitting. The School bowling lacked the accuracy of direction and length. The fielding of both sides was smart, the Union team showing a marked improvement in this direction.
