| John Crombie |
On a tricky batting wicket at Weston Park, Valley suffered its first loss for the season against a Union side lead by some great bowling from veteran John Crombie.
Crombie continued his fine bowling form for the season taking 6-22 of his 7.3 over's including a wicket maiden in his first over. After his first four over's he already had a five wicket bag but took a little longer to take his sixth wicket, which left Valley with a score of only 98 on the board. Paul Johnston marked his return from injury with 2-26, with both of his wickets coming of consecutive balls, bowling in partnership with Crombie, while Neil Rushton moved closer to 200 career wickets with 1-20. Michael Ormandy took the other wicket and finished with 1-23.
Chasing 99 for victory, Union struggled its was through but some good partnerships in the middle order saw them surpass the required total was the loss of 5 wickets. Neil Rushton was top scorer for the innings with 21 not out, while Glynn Cameron, after making his way back from the U2 concert in Auckland the previous night, recorded 15.
