The future strength of the Union senior team looks to be in good hands after a youthful Union team beat Oamaru by 7 wickets at the backfield of Whitestone Centennial Park.
The Union side was one of the youngest teams to take the field in a number of seasons for the club with five key players missing due to various commitments, but for the Union team the only thing to go wrong for the whole day was losing the toss and being forced to field. Oamaru struggled to score runs consistently with a good bowling effort backed up by some equally good fielding. Nathan Hill celebrated his first senior game for Union with the outstanding figures of 3-6 of 7.2 over's bowling three consecutive maidens at one point. Isaac Shields in his first visit to the bowling crease for the club took 2-16 of five over's while Stu Dickinson took 2-21, Oamaru all out for 110 in the 41st over.
Openers Anthony Cromwell and Jeremiah Shields got their team of to a great start taking the score to 59 in quick succession before Cromwell was bowled by Alex Baddock for 15 in the 11th over. Union looked to be struggling at one stage being 79-3 after the loss of Jeremiah Shields for a hard hit 42, but Sean Conlan and Thomas Shields took the team through to 112 for a seven wicket victory and Union to top of the table in the Dick Hunt competition.
