For the first time since 2000 Union will be holder of the Borton Cup after a comprehensive 79 run win over Oamaru in the final played at Whitestone Contracting Stadium.
After losing the toss and being put into bat, Union got off to a good start with openers Duncan Drew (13) and Antony Cromwell (21) combining for a 42 run partnership for the opening wicket before the loss of Drew to the bowling of David Sewell. Union lost two wickets quickly and looked to be wobbling, but Jeremiah Shields and Glynn Cameron then got the innings back on track with a steady 27 run partnership before Shields was run out for 17. At 80-4, Cameron and Mark Wilson then combined for the largest partnership of the game, setting Union up for a good total with Wilson out for 40, a 79 run partnership. Todd Sidon(0) and Cameron (47) were the next to be dismissed as Union looked to hit out in the final over's. At the completion of its 45 over's they had scored 198-8 with Ben Sheat hitting a big straight six with less than 9 balls remaining.
Oamaru needed a good start to chase down Union's total but their opposition applied the pressure right from the start with the top order struggling to score runs against the accurate bowling. Phil Crossan was extremely economical in his bowling with his 10 over's going for only 12 runs, taking a wicket in the first ball of the second over of the innings. As the innings continued only Glen Paterson looked to occupy the crease but struggled to score runs like the other batsman. Oamaru were eventually all out for 114 in 38 over's. With Ben Coleman (21) and David Sewell combining for a partnership of over 20 runs, before Coleman was caught out in a good diving catch by man of the match Glynn Cameron. After the economical effort by the bowlers in the first over's it was Cameron and captain Paul Johnston who ripped through the middle and tail order of the Oamaru innings with Cameron taking 4-22 and Paul Johnston taking 3-31. David Sewell was the pick of the Oamaru batsman being the last man out, scoring 32.
