The Union Cricket Club Senior team came close to beating a 95 year club record today, beating Oamaru by 200 runs in a comprehensive display. The win was 1 run of the record set in 1915 in the first Union CC match at King George Park.
After losing the toss and being forced to bat Union's North Otago openers, Chris Smith and Ben Cant, got the team of to a steady start moving the total to 26 before Cant was caught of the bowling of Horrell for 27. Duncan Drew and Smith then moved the score to 85 before Smith was out, caught of the bowling of evergreen Paul Selbie for 27. Union looked to be in trouble despite Drew now looking to anchor the innings, having a middle order collapse losing four wickets for only 40 runs and the possibility of missing out on a 200+ score. With the loss of Drew for a well hit 70 and Stuart Dickinson for 21, this saw captain Paul Johnston and Phil Crossan at the crease. After Crossan was given some friendly batting advice from the opposition he started an onslaught not seen in a number of years at King George Park. When Crossan was out 7 over's later, 69 runs had been scored, 58 of them to Crossan of only 26 balls including 5 sixes and 3 fours and notching up his first senior fifty. Union completed its 50 over's, finishing with 276, Johnston not out with 21 on the board.
Oamaru never really looked like putting up a competitive chase, all out for 76 in just over 22 over's. Four bowlers where used and all taking two wickets or more. Ben Cant was the best of the bowlers taking 3-3 while Dan Conlan also took three wickets finishing with 3-19. The two other bowlers used where Glynn Cameron (2-10) and Crossan, backing up his explosive batting, with 2-43.
