Thomas Shields scored his second senior century in the weekend after the Union Senior team managed to chase down 260 for victory over Albion at King George Park.
Albion batted first and were in some trouble at 48-4 before a big partnership between Dylan Winter and Darren Shillito of 81 put them back on track. After the loss of Shillito for 49, Winter then put on 48 with Jeremy Smith as Albion looked to increase the run rate in the final over's. They failed to bat the 50 over's as Glynn Cameron, not required for the Hawke Cup Zone fixture in the weekend, found some form with the ball taking the last three batsman to fall in his last three over's. Winter top scored for the innings falling just short of a century with 93. For Union both Cameron (3-43) and Paul Johnston (3-45) took three wickets each, while youngster Paul Stratton took 2-47 his first senior wickets.
Needing a good start Unions openers Jason Todd and Thomas Shields put on 64 for the opening partnership before Todd was bowled by Ricky Whyte for 9. Sean Conlan was the next batsman in and put on a further 32 runs with Shields before he was caught of the bowling of Pringle for 14. Realising that Shields was the key to the Union chase the following batsman looked to bat round him as he moved to his second century for the club. Shields bought up his century with a boundary and hit two further boundaries before he was dismissed for 117. In the final over's the required run rate with over a run a ball, but schoolboy Ryan Whitburn in a cameo innings hit 29 not out including 3 boundaries and 1 six. At the other end Grant McMillan hit two boundaries as well to help Union to a 3 wicket victory. Ricky Whyte was the pick of the Albion bowling taking 2-32 with figures of 1-0 of his first four over's. Pringle was the main wicket taker with 3-51 of ten over's.
