Jake Greenslade smashed 142 runs in only 70 balls in the Borton Cup senior game between Union and Oamaru at KGP in the weekend.
After losing the toss and being put in to bat, the home side lost opener Glynn Cameron (4) early before the fireworks in the form of Greenslade started. In what has to be one of the most explosive innings to be played at King George Park the youngster notched up a half century in 23 balls and took him only another 27 to bring up his first century for the club. It was 20 balls later that he was out for 142, including 9 sixes and 18 fours, as Union was scoring at over 8 an over thanks to his innings. With veteran Duncan Drew, the pair put on 178 for the second wicket at more than a run a ball and put their side in a strong position. Jeremiah Shields joined Drew at the crease and that pair put on another 100 runs as the score started to mount. Shields was bowled by Ben Cant for 41 while Drew was out caught and bowled to Matt Brien for 87. Sean Conlan (36) and Paul Johnston (32) then combined for a further 78 runs in 8 overs as the innings finished with a massive 371-4 in 50 overs, the highest total by a Union Senior side in one day cricket. Oamaru's bowlers weren't helped by some poor fielding and only captain Matt Murphy took two wickets or more finishing with 2-70 of his 10 overs.
Havea started postively for Oamaru in their run chase but his team failed to find anyone who would notch up the required big innings for a successful chase. Havea was the 3rd wicket to fall, scoring at more than a run a ball, but Oamaru lost wickets in clumps and were all out for 173. For Union Dan Conlan took 3-31, Brad Fleming 2-23 and Sean Conlan bowling leg spin took 2-19.
With the news that Waitaki Boys High 1st XI beat Valley in the Payne Tempero Cup challenge in the weekend, this coming Saturday will be a Payne Tempero Cup challenge against Waitaki Boys. Seniors will be looking to take the cup back to KGP after losing it in the first challenge in the season against Valley in October.
