Oamaru v. Union
Monday, 30 January 1922

Fred W Ongley
Fred W Ongley

The Oamaru and Union teams met at King George's Park on Saturday, the matting wicket being unrealisable and the outfield, though not so as long as usual very heavy, so that the best strokes earned very little, and there was much difficulty in judging runs, resulting in the dismissal of Ongley and H. Robertson of Union and Sumpter of Oamaru. For Union H. Robertson made 42 including a number of good strokes, but judgement in running was bad, and while he missed a number of runs that were easy, he was responsible for Ongley being run out and later his own dismissal in the same manner. He was missed three times in the slips. Gale was unfortunate in being bowled off his own body by a ball that got up unduly. Montgomery and Atkinson bowled very steadily for Oamaru, and helped by better fielding would have dismissed the side for much less. L. Sumpter batted well for Oamaru and Uttley looked set before Graham bowled with one that turned back. Atkinson kept his end up until a dozen had been reached, and Sumpter kept going steadily until at 30 he was run out. Graham bowled patchily, but threw down many good ones. Union led on first innings by nine runs., Oamaru batting one man short.
