The first match of the season on King George's Park found the ground in a better state than usual, but the outfield was very heavy owing to the thickness of the grass, so that runs were hard to get by purely orthodox means, as Uttley found, for it was almost impossible to get more than two for a ground stroke. The early batsmen found the matting on grass play differently from the uncovered grass, the ball rising more abruptly and as a result, several chances were given but few were held. Milnes and Sumpter could not get going, but Zimmerman, opening more certainly than usual quickly got into his stride and hit hard and clean, his score of 64 including several sixes. With eight wickets down for 139, Oamaru's score wasn't handsome, but Kinder and Montgomery got together, and the latter made a feast of it, hitting five sixes in a score of 49, while Kinder batted in more orthodox style, playing excellent cricket for 44 not out, so that the total had reached 226. Union opened with Catto and McDonald, Catto hit hard and straight for 28 before being caught, but McDonald poked about and was lucky twice in not being caught. Union at drawing of stumps had lost two wickets for 39.
