Union v. Oamaru
Monday, 7 February 1927

James M. Robertson
James M. Robertson

The third round of the first grade matches was begun on Saturday. Oamaru and Union meeting on the Oamaru wicket, which was not quite so accountable as usual. The outfield was fast and the scoring rapid. Oamaru took first strike and following the dismissal of Milnes, Jones and Uttley put on 120 for the second wicket. Uttley batted admirably and scored with a variety of sound strokes, Jones being less orthodox but more fortunate. Inder, a new member of the side, made a number of nice shots in his 32, and Smith played a useful strike for 25. Zimmerman looked to be going well when he was caught one-handed by Gregory on the square leg boundary. J. Robertson and H. Robertson were the most successful of the bowlers. Union opened well, Crone getting 28 quickly, while Catto and McDonald looked dangerous until Montgomery and Inder were given the ball and their advent changed the complexion of the game, for with three for 120 Union looked to be in for a big score, but Montgomery's good length slows were very effective, while Inder kept the runs down and bowled intelligently. The Oamaru fielding cost the side many runs and several catches went astray.
