Union v. Albion
Monday, 9 February 1931

E D Brown
E D Brown

Union won the toss and sent Albion in to bat on a good wicket, with the outfield fast. Albion put up its best batting performance this season, giving Union an afternoon's leather hunting in compiling a total of 260 runs. A. Brooker gained a well earned century, giving a bright display, his best scoring shots being on the off. Union had lost six wickets when time was called. A Brooker and Sampson opened, putting on 108 for the first wicket. Six bowlers were tried before Brown bowled Sampson, who batted very soundly. His best scoring shot was a leg glance. L. Brooker followed, but McDonald bowled him with a good one. Geddes joined A. Brooker, but soon lost his wicket in jumping out to Brown before being smartly stumped by Guttridge. Davey, went for the bowling, and had reached 23 when Tonkin clean bowled him. A. Brooker was next to go, after having reached 103. He showed excellent batting form, his batting being very forceful, and his score included 15 fours. Maddigan bowled Palmer with a bailer. McLaren had reached six when he was taken behind the wickets, while Todd had 11 runs on when he gave Blair a catch. Jacobs batted very defensively, having 26 runs to his credit when McDonald broke through with a good one. Ottrey made several good hits in his score of 17 before he lost his wicket. The Union field was very erratic. McDonald, Brown, Tonkin and Maddigan shared the wickets.

Union opened badly, Blair being caught at cover early. H. Robertson played one to Geddes at point, the fieldsman making a dive and taking a brilliant catch. The same fieldsman took another magnificent one-handed catch in dismissing Robbie when he had 10 on the board. McLaren bowled J. Robertson, who had scored 21 with several fine shots to the on side. Brown was well held up by McLaren, who caught and bowled him. Six wickets were then down for 48 and Union looked as if it would have been dismissed with a small score. McDonald and Meikle saved the side, however, and carried the score to 110. McDonald reached 50 by beautiful off drives, seven fours and a six being included in his score. Meikle was content to hold his wicket up and let McDonald do the scoring. The fielding of Albion was very good. McLaren secured four of the wickets.
