Duncan Drew took a batting record of Russell Payne in the weekend as he led the Union Senior team to a crushing 167 run victory of second placed Waitaki Boys

After losing the toss and being asked to bat, Union got of to a bad start losing opener Antony Cromwell in the first ball of the innings. Riley Rooney, opening the bowling for Waitaki, had the opposition under real pressure taking the wicket of Cromwell, then Jeremiah Shields (7) and Sean Conlan (10) with Union being 3-37 in the 12th over. Veterans Glynn Cameron and Duncan Drew then combined to relive some of the pressure putting on 60 for the 4th wicket before Cameron was out leg before wicket to player/coach Stephan Grobler. Union captain Thomas Shields then put on another good partnership with Drew, the two notching up 50 runs in 12 over's. With the loss of Shields (14) in the 37th over his team started to hit out looking for a big total. They put on 88 in 13 over Union finishing with 235 in their allotted 50 over's. Drew was 104 not out at the end of the innings, his 7th senior century and surpassing Russell Payne's club record of most senior centuries. Rooney bowled all of his 10 over's in one spell, taking 3-27 while Grobler took 3-37 of his 10 over's.

Waitaki were never really looking like making a challenge as they struggled with the economical bowling from Union. After ten over's they only had 10 runs on the board with 6 of those over's being maidens. They batted 35 over's in the end, all out for 68 at a rate of less than 2 runs an over. All Union bowlers returned extremely economical figures. Drew took 2-5 of 4.3 over's, Cameron took 2-12 of 8 including 3 maidens, Chris Ware while not taking any wickets took the outstanding one day figures of 0-8 of 8 over's with 4 maidens and Brad Fleming was the top wicket-taker with 3-17 of 6 over's.

Union extend their led of the Borton Cup, still undefeated with 70 points, while the school teams are 2nd 30 points behind.
