Thomas Shields

The Union Senior team made it two in a row in the weekend with a comfortable victory over Glenavy at the Glenavy Domain

Winning the toss and electing to bat the top order got their team of to a perfect start with the Shields twins putting on 66 for the first wicket before the loss of Thomas Shields for 36. Jeremiah then combined with first drop Blake James to continue to keep their team in control moving the score to 148 before James was caught for 37. Drew quickly followed and then Union started to falter a little as they lost 5 wickets (including Drew) for the addition of only 26 runs. The tail then wagged with Happy Singh and Aneesh Kumar putting on 43 runs for the 9th wicket, Singh racing to 37 in the final few overs of the innings. The final wicket then fell in the final over to leave Union with 262 on the board, a competitive total on the small ground. Jeremiah Shields (66) was in fine form at the top of the order while Singh (37) and Kumar (28) provided some explosive hitting in the final overs. Jordan Mulligan was the pick of the Glenavy bowlers taking a five wicket bag ending up with 5-57 while Zach Graham (2-49) and Kurt Thomas (2-46) took two wickets each.

Glenavy looked well within the chase in the early part of its innings keeping within striking distance of the required run rate. However with the wicket of Kurt Thomas (16) this started a collapse that Glenavy never recovered from with spinner Scott Kitto ripping through the middle to late order leaving Glenavy in serious trouble. Kitto took the last two wickets in three balls to leave him with 6-34, his first five wicket bag in Union colours. He was well supported by Jordy Whyte (3-15). For Glenavy Ethan Booth top scored with 38, while Ross McCulloch added 27. Glenavy all out in the 33rd over for 119.
